The filling of losses consists in the leveling and in the imitation of the surface structure (i.e. brushstrokes, impastos, cracks or simply the visible weave pattern).

The filling must be strictly limited to the loss and do not protrude ont the original.
The filler can be of divers compositon, nature, material or colour depending on the artwork.
This step precedes the inpainting and is decisive for the letters outcome.

The paint layer we apply during the retouching process is really thin. Even if the applied colours are in perfect harmony with the surrounding area, if the surface structure doesn’t match, the touching up will be visible.
